6 years ago tonight...

a phish show at msg. there's certain pieces of memory that i can recall about that night. i can recall a ride into mid-town in an old bronco. somewhat light traffic. a very, very cold night outside. almost the entire posse had tickets. up in the 400's. page side HIGH!

some fungus. that hit like fog rising over a desolate road during split open and melt. accapella freebird. never saw that coming. what's up with those worms on stage?

giggly set break. round room pulsating as we checked in on the peeps down below. back up top for the second set. free busting out powerfully. a ridonkulous yem to close. the last divided sky encore.

couldn't defrost the car afterwards. couldn't stop laughing either. fun times.

jack white is a pretty bad ass dude. and everything the dude did this year confirmed it. he beat the living shit out of some singer from some band. he joined bob dylan on stage. and he had the coolest cameo in one of the weirdest movies of the year.

at first, i thought the white stripes were kinda lame. too hard rock and god, that chick drummer is cute, but she has about as much rhythem as i do. but after a couple of listens it grew on me. the crappy drumming actually felt right with all that fuzz. and i wondered what jack white could do with a conventional band behind him.

so he just skips that part and starts producing albums instead. with country singers.

on my first listen: "that sure is country"

then: "it is pretty rockin' though"

finally: "yeah!"

such is loretta lynn's 'van lear rose', which is presented here for your consumption.

best of 2004 pt 2

how about aj feely running around like an effin' girl the other night? as if the orange uni's weren't enough. i remember back to when the pats were a heavy dog in the super bowl against the rams. it was kinda cool to root for the pats in that spot. but damn, i didn't ask for three years of total patriot dominance. fuck a tom brady. i have about as much tolerance for another patriot super bowl as saturdays in february with nothing but the nba on. damn near close to zero.

but anyway...i have 2 albums i'm nominating for best of the year. both of which are cut from somewhat the same clothe. both heavy on acoustic guitars and surreal songwriting.

the first is a little more straightforward.
iron & wine's 'our endless numbered days', is just pretty much one dude, sam beam, and an acoustic guitar. nice melodies and interesting lyrics. one of the better albums i've run into this year.

1. On Your Wings
2. Naked As We Came
3. Cinder And Smoke
4. Sunset Soon Forgotten
5. Teeth In The Grass
6. Love And Some Verses
7. Radio War
8. Each Coming Night
9. Free Until They Cut Me Down
10. Fever Dream
11. Sodom, South Georgia
12. Passing Afternoon

the second, eschews genre's and does stuff i've really never heard before. acousticaly and lyrically way out there. califone's 'heron king blues', has probably got the most listens on the nomad for stuff stuff released this year. it's also made me seek out more, curiously, and being just as happy with some of their earlier stuff. enjoy.

20 December 2004

best of 2004

2004 is winding up to be a pretty lame year for new music. this years best of lists are shaping up to be a bunch of default picks like the roots and brian wilson. nothing's wrong with that except that the roots album is surely below par by even the band's standards and the brian wilson album, is really just a souped up reissue.

so the press has to really go to the edges to fill out top 40 lists. thank god they did. on almost every list is the arcade fire's "funeral". i had never heard of them. apparently there's a lot of indie hype surrounding the band. so i searched out the torrent, gave it a listen, and, lo-and-behold, it's pretty damn good rock music.

and (gasp!) it's probably one of the single best records i've heard this year.

so as our year crunks to an end, we would like to start trunkyard's 'best of 2004' list with this album offered up to the citizens of trunkonia for your downloading pleasure.
